The School

Who We Are

school logo

Established in 1988, when Sifu Leung arrived from Guangzhou, we are a non-commercial school dedicated to furthering the traditional art of Pak Mei kung fu.

New people are currently welcome, our door is open.

There are no membership fees as Sifu volunteers his time.

If you would like to become a part of our group, good character, regular attendance, hard training and a commitment to Sifu and your training brothers and sisters are the only requirements.

NOTE: the study of any martial art is a risky pastime and involves strenuous exercise. Any individual undertaking such a study should be aware of the risks and assume responsibility and liability for any injury that may occur. Please consult a medical practitioner before commencing any physical activity.

What We Do

We train together once a week, with everyone expected to practice during the week between sessions. The harder you train, the faster you learn. We train in the open air and on grass.

A typical session starts with stretching and strengthening exercises, followed by people going through their tou-lou (套路). Tou-lou is a set of exercises (empty hand or with weapons) consisting of numerous moves linked together in a form of extended practice combat.

We also train with vests, focus pads and other equipment to simulate more dynamic interaction against unpredictable and resisting opponents. More advanced students practice “crossing hands” together, but this is high level training as opposed to free sparring and is based upon individual training objectives.

Pak Mei can be broadly classified as a short-fist Southern Chinese style with low deep stances and kicking kept below the waist.

Over the course of many years, students may learn up to 10 empty hand patterns and 5 weapons sets. Traditional weapons include the staff (Kwan), single and double swords (Dou) and halberd (Kwan Dou).

How We Do It

All training is done on a one-to-one basis within our group. Each student is trained at their own pace. A basic level of fitness is required, however more athletic individuals will be able to learn more quickly.

We are a traditional Chinese martial arts school. As such, there is no grading system, instead we have an informal “family” of older and younger (based on tenure not age) brothers and sisters. It is expected that more experienced students will provide guidance and students of similar skills typically train together. Sifu will also step in and demonstrate nuances after he feels that a student has met certain requirements.

Students are given a kernel of technique, and then have the responsibility of learning it before they receive the next kernel. Attending training is free however our art is not given away cheaply.

Real kung fu can only be earned by the student themselves, through dedication and hardwork.

Social Events

Besides the weekly training sessions, the school also gets together twice a year for the New Year and Mid-Autumn Lion Dances around Chinatown. This is usually combined with a casual home style dinner afterwards where participants can relax after the day’s hard work.

We also have an opportunity to pay our respects to Sifu at his birthday dinner, an annual event held in mid February. Below are a selection of birthday dinner photos taken over the many years that Sifu has been teaching.
